Saint Patrick

In room 1 we have been learning about saints, what I enjoyed was finding out new things about saints. What I found challenging was writing it in my own words.

Born: 385 AD, Britannia
Died: 431 AD, Saul, United Kingdom
Feast: 17 March (Saint Patrick's Day)
Full name: Maewyn Succat
Nationality: Roman

Saint Patrick has a special day called Saint Patrick’s day. It is on the 17 March, a day Irish people like to celebrate.

How he became a saint

His real name is Maewyn Succat and he took on the name when he became a priest.
When he was a teenager he was kidnapped by pirates and sold to slavery in Ireland to herd sheep.

In the 6 years he was in captivity, he learned to speak fluently in Irish and he turned to God in prayer. He escaped after having a dream sent from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast where he would find a ship waiting to sail to Britain.

He is believed to have met up with his parents in Wales before travelling to France where he became a priest and bishop. Saint Patrick was sent another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him to come and walk with them again.  He was set the task of teaching Christianity to the Irish. He travelled throughout Ireland, preaching the Gospel. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country.

Winter

In room 1 we have been learning about painting pictures in peoples, minds. I hope you see a picture too.

Outside wild, ice cold waves raged along the shore. Frozen grass crunched  beneath my feet. Gray sky still and silent waited for company. Faraway frosty trees looked like toys.

Fizz,foam and froth

In room 1 we are learning about chemical changes. I enjoyed making things fizz foam and froth. What I found challenging was writing the explanation.

Have you ever wondered what makes  things fizz, foam and froth? A physical reaction is reversible and a chemical reaction is irreversible. A physical reaction is when you turn water into ice and then turn ice into water again. A chemical reaction is when you change the properties forever.

When you add vinegar to baking soda it explodes and creates a chemical reaction. But why? Because the vinegar changes the properties of the baking soda forever.

The nine stars of Matariki

In room 1 we have been learning about the nine stars of Matariki.

What is Matariki? Did you know Matariki has nine stars? Matariki is a group of nine stars that mark the beginning of the Maori New year. The stars names are Matariki,Tupu-a-rangi,Waipuna-a-rangi,Waiti,Tupua-nuku,Ururangi, Waita, Pohutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-rangi. The dates of when Matariki is celebrated always changes because the stars appear just after a new moon in June or July.Matariki is important because it tells when to harvest the kumara and other things. Matariki is celebrated by having bonfires and dancing and games, you could do this at home to celebrate Matariki as well. Matariki should be a public holiday because it is the maori new year and we have a public holiday for the 1st of January new year.

The challenge  was finding information about nine stars instead of seven.I really enjoyed learning about the eighth and ninth stars.
